"Do they want a full time representative or a part-timer?"

Since I've been slagging Scottish Labour for their uselessness and hypocrisy for the last few days (not least for deleting press releases from their website), let's redress the imbalance with a visit to the SNP website (yes, I know, but bear with me).

John Mason today challenged Labour’s candidate for the Glasgow East by-election to commit to being a full time MP for the area.

The SNP candidate was speaking as today announced he would resign from Glasgow City Council if elected to Westminster on 24th July.

“I am committed to this constituency and to being a full time MP for Glasgow East," he said.

“As the SNP candidate in this by-election I have said clearly to people on the doorsteps that if they give me the honour of representing them in Westminster I will resign as a councillor on the 25th of July.

“That is my commitment to the East End.

“It has been a huge honour to serve as a councillor for the East End but I know that people in the Glasgow East deserve a full time MP who will provide a strong voice in London for this constituency.

“Margaret Curran needs to decide – does she want to be an MP for Glasgow East or an MSP. Before anyone even considers voting Labour they should ask very carefully, do they want a full time representative arguing for lower fuel and energy costs or a part-timer sitting quietly on Gordon Brown’s backbenches."

Er, John...?

Where do they find these people?!

Salmond's answer on newsnight was "They already voted me in, so fuck 'em"

Still can't see any chance of Labour losing Glasgow East, but it's funny to see them so rattled. And here's a confession - I find Margaret Curran a little sexy. In an evil granny way. But then I fancy David Milliband too.

I suppose it's worth reminding ourselves that Scotland already has a part-time Minister -- Des Browne.

Seems to be the way to be, north of the border...

Schoolboy error, right enough. I have fuck all sympathy with the argument in any case - it's perfectly reasonable to hold an MP and an MSP post at the same time - more so when consituencies in both parliaments overlap. I would understand the kind of fucktards who propose this argument better if they were having a go at someone who held a Devon seat as an MP and a Aberdeenshire seat as an MSP - but that's just not the case. Causing an unnecessary by-election (with the cost and hassle involved) should also be avoided.

Part-time Secretaries of State are an entirely different matter and criticism is fully justified.

Personally, I'd go for part-time. They can do less damage that way.

Well they should at least have the decency to do the work pro-rata.

M Curran on the news tonight was priceless though. She asked for the people of Glasgow East to vote her their MP (having lived there all her life!!!!) and promised to then go round them all and ask if they wanted her to resign as MSP.

Hahahahaha.

It's great to see Labour in this state of implosion, I'm loving every minute.

Wonder if she'll stand to lead the party now too...

Tell you this one thing. As a lifelong believer in freedom, if I lived there I'd vote for Frances Curran.

I might not agree with anything she says, but she does mean every word she says.

I'm tempted by the part time solution.

Abolish all the MSPs and let the MPs sit in Holyrood 2 days a week.
