Gordon and Wendy: my money's on Cyclops

Well, this isn't going too well, is it?
Labour's implosion began just after midday in the Commons, where MPs had gathered for Prime Minister's Questions. Already facing a rough ride after the party's meltdown in local elections last week, Mr Brown was quizzed by David Cameron, the Tory leader, on Ms Alexander's call for an early referendum on Scottish independence.
But instead of backing her, Mr Brown said the situation should be reviewed when the Calman commission on devolution had reported. And, in an even more surprising sign of a party in chaos, he appeared to deny that she had even called for a referendum.
When the Tory leader asked Mr Brown if he agreed with Ms Alexander that a referendum should be held "now", the Prime Minister replied: "That is not what she has said."
Mr Cameron retorted: "I think you are losing touch with reality."
That happened long ago. And, as I said on Tuesday, I'm not convinced that Wendy's actually wrong; rather than running from this issue, maybe the opposition parties could actually call the SNP's bluff. It would certainly take independence off the table for a generation - if it was defeated, that is. So it's a gamble, certainly; but are we really better off waiting until the fight is being conducted on the separatists' terms, and at a time of their choosing?
But this latest fiasco is entirely of Labour's own making - in fact, entirely of Wendy's own making; what in sport they call an unforced error. What did she think was going to happen? Brown was just going to roll over? As shit-fingered as he is, that was never likely. No, whatever the rights and wrongs on the policy question, it's a massive tactical blunder to have tried to railroad the Prime Minister into backing her U-turn, because now she's fucked, he's fucked, and they're all fucked.
The capacity of this government and its acolytes in the North for serially screwing things up is hilarious to watch. Already on its knees, it's an open question how many more of these self-inflicted wounds it can take before it expires altogether. But this is the break-up of the United Kingdom we're talking about; these pathetic internecine squabbles have consequences that will reverberate long after Brown and Alexander have returned to a richly deserved obscurity.
The fragrant Wendy has made a right balls-up of this entire affair, and politicians and columnists are now openly calling for her head. We may be very close to a tipping point for her "leadership", such as it is, and once that is reached, not even her biggest fan in the blogosphere will be able to save her.

True, but following her being whipped naked through the streets, ahe may yet arrive at your door; vulnerable to the full gamut of Hellenic naughtiness... :)

Indeed not, no matter how much you practise wearing your underpants over your trousers outside her house. Not even the professional recreants of the Electoral Commission will be able to slap on another layer of whitewash.
Hilarious as NuLab's death throes are, however, they sadly give another opportunity for Evil Eck to advance his anti-Union plots. It would be nice if, just for a few months, Wendy and El Gordo could get on with fighting the Nats rather than each other.

On another point.
Should Gordon Brown have voted in last week's elections?
Even if it were not illegal is it not incumbent on a PM to set a good example and not use his two votes in two elections that are for the same layer of Government?

Gie the girl a break. She thought she was engaging in mental gymnastics an' putin her points acrose in typical Lanarkshire Labour prose.
'Bring it oan', 'BRING.IT.OAN'.
She may as well have added 'Yabassa!'.
Pity Salmond was her nemesis at FMQs today. Wee Bendy's chagrin was joyous to watch: could those luscious lips have travelled farther down? Her eyes implore 'No more!'? Anymore?
I was waiting for the plaintive (in her fishwife rendition) 'Ah waant ma mammy'.
Even the LibDem numpty had a go at her.
Fallen angel? Fallen idol.
Commiserations, Mr.E.
Send Trixie flowers, you know it makes sense.
STB.

What IS that in her throat? She is wearing the same expression as our cat when he's trying to cough up a hair ball.
I can't believe she is still in her position. She must be the most inept and incompetent leaders ever.
I actually agree with Salmond, much as I hate to admit it. Why should he dance to Labours tune? Why should he have a referendum until the date he stated he would? Purely from a political standpoint, Salmond is actually taking the risk that the SNP will not be able to keep a stable economy in Scotland and discredit a referendum vote in favour of the SNP.
Either way he should stand up in the Scots parliament and tell her to go fuck herself.

Wee Alec does sound like he went to the Hitler School of Oratory.
Wendy (hiss) is acting in a similar way to the Lib Dems over the referendum on the EU Constitution but it just doesn't wash.
And STB is right: where are my flowers?

Can someone enlighten me on the following questions:
If the referrendum did go ahead and Scotland did vote yes what would happen to:
1. Handing over vast swathes ouf Englands taxpayer cash to shore up their own tax receipts?
2. Labours grip on the English parlament?

Wendy makes even Clegg look like a statesman. She's definately a candidate for the Fuckwit Of The Year Award. As a Nat myself I truly hope her party keeps her on as leader.
Tomrat,
I see you take your lead from Kelvin Mackenzie. The 'subsidy' point has been debunked economically by a range of economists. Yes, spend per capita is higher in Scotland (and there are many good reasons for this being the case) but these spend per capita figures and the 'Barnett Formula' are entirely misleading when set alongside the entirely disproportionate tax contribution through Scotland's natural resources.
Anyone who believes the status quo constitutional situation serves any members of the union well(apart from Northern Ireland maybe) is a moron. It has to change and I now have little doubt that it will change sooner rather than later.

What is it that you find so "fragrant" about her? I've just been listening to her and she screeches like a crab in boiling water!
Losing touch with reality, the party grassroots and, it appears, Scotland. Losing his mind too perhaps.
The whole situation is incredible. For the PM to deny on the record that Wendy Alexander had called for a referendum is astonishing and factually incorrect.
