Another day gone, another bottle lost
This miserable man just gets more jelly-boned by the day:
Gordon Brown will not receive the Dalai Lama in Downing Street in an effort to avoid confrontation with China over Tibet, The Times has learnt.
The Prime Minister will, instead, see the Tibetan spiritual leader in Lambeth Palace, home of the Archbishop of Canterbury, enabling him to claim to the Chinese that he is receiving the Dalai Lama in a spiritual rather than political capacity. [...]
Both Tony Blair and John Major saw the Dalai Lama in Downing Street. Angela Merkel became the first German head of state [sic] to meet him last September, while President Bush received him at the White House and presented him with the Congressional Gold Medal.
It's almost as artless as the farcical "compromise" with the Olympic torch, which just ended up making Gordon - and us - look daft. Why does this man continually insist on shooting himself in the foot in quite such a comedy fashion? After so many daft cock-ups, the narrative is now all about where the next custard pie is coming from, not about policy - let alone the poor bloody Tibetans.
Perhaps he should welcome the Dalai Lama to Downing Street but refuse to touch him.

The latest plan is for Brown to be in the same room as the Dalai Lama at Downing Street, but will ignore him and pretend he isn't there.
This is so plausible that the Chinese will believe it completely.

I am with you Mr E in that Brown is becoming farcical, literally. It is not even funny now, from his maniacal "It is a lovely day isn't it?" start to his interview with Fern the bloater, to his lack of any credibility in staying away from Crewe and Nantwich, to just about anything you might care to mention.
It is embarrassing for us and for Labour mongs who continually tell us what a great guy he is and deeply committed.
Get rid of the fucker quickly, even if it means the Tories losing ground, because it is too sad to see.

Gordon loses his bottle again whilst Bliar lost his backbone.
Maybe it's downing street and their pointless advisors and spin doctors. Let's get rid of those and then let's see what the MP's come up with.
Just for a laugh?
anyone?
no?
Did he have any bottle / backbone to begin with in the first place?

He shouldn't been seen with the Dalai Lama, after the racist attacks upon ethnic Han Chinese owned businesses (and even non-Tibetan children by the Dalai Lama's followers).
Not much difference between the ethnic cleansing of Han Chinese in Tibet and that of Jewish people in 1930s and 1940s Germany and other European countries.
At least Neville Chamberlain didn't invite Hitler to Downing Street!

Jonathan M Scott, there is no evidence apart from the word of the Chinese Communist Party that there were ethnically motivated attacks on the Han Chinese in Tibet.
Furthermore there is no evidence that Dalai Lama has encouraged any violence at all or had anything to do with the rioting.
Thirdly if you want to support a state that has invaded another and proceeded to use it to settle their excess population I would steer clear of bringing up Hitler.

He could always turn up whilst everyone else is at lunch and hope the Chinese don't notice.
It didn't work for the Constitution, but you never know.

Typical politician. That's not EXACTLY what I said blah blah, weasel, weasel. It doesn't matter where he meets the Dalai Lama. The Chinese will get the message. They will ignore it and carry on. Tibet is just an uppity province of theocratic loonies as far as they are concerned.
It was a very primitive and backward country. The Chinese are trying to 'civilise' it. Unfortunately as ever the whole mess is a matter of perspective.

I do like the idea of the Chinese trying to 'civilize' Tibet, I am sure such lofty (if Imperialistic) ideals would flatter them. Sadly they are there to strip mine, the fate of Tibet and its peculiar theocracy has nothing to do with idealism and a whole lot to do with Lithium and Copper ("the treasure trove in the west" as a young Hu Jinto referred to it). Also to refer back to Jonathan M Scott, it is interesting to parallel the total fatalities of the recent riots against the death toll of the Maoist invasion. As for the Dalai 'Hitler' Lama, he has persistently called for peace and dialogue with the Chinese in Tibet despite huge pressure from many within the exiled community. Also this was not an elite attacking a small community as happen with the Jews in 30’s Germany; rather it is a minority indigenous population attacking (very unsuccessfully) an immigrant community who now hold every single local government position within Tibet; more analogous to the situation in the USA or Australia perhaps?
