In vino veritas
As a postscript to the Scottish Politicial of the Year Awards, it appears that nary a year goes by without some Labour hack making a fool of themselves at the event:
Matthew Marr quit his £60,000-a-year post as spokesman for the leader of the Scottish Labour Party after uttering a four-letter insult about the First Minister, Alex Salmond, at the Scottish Politician of the Year dinner last Thursday. [...]
He was forced to stand down after his remarks about the First Minister were widely reported. It is also understood that he became involved in an argument with a female Scottish Nationalist MSP and was abusive towards a cloakroom superviser.
In a resignation statement, Mr Marr said his outburst was "entirely out of character" and issued an apology to Mr Salmond.
I'm reliably informed that the outburst was very much in character for this unlikeable man - but I will not condemn anyone for calling Salmond a cunt, since by any useful measure this constitutes fair comment.
Still, perhaps Labour might consider it advisable to give next year's awards a miss? After all, on current form, it's not like they're going to get nominated for anything.

Oh come on: this is just light hearted banter and, as it stands, it's pretty pedestrian compared to previous year's antics.
Now, if he wrapped Salmon up in a curtain and set fire to it, that would be worth comment...

An amusing event for those of us who dislike both NuLab and the Nats, but sadly not enough to bring down either party. No doubt young Mr Marr will re-surface somewhere else in Scottish public life and/or NuLab machine politics.
The Scotsman says he is - sorry, was - paid £60,000 pa. The Times puts it at £45,000. I have to say the latter strikes me as more likely (and equally unmerited), given that an MSP's basic is £53,091 and the witty heckler would otherwise have been earning more than his boss Wendy. Mind you, in debate so far she has said nothing as effective against Salmond as "cunt."

I'm with Cleanthes on this one, I'm afraid. Calling a spade a spade, while tactless, is quite a step down from arson.

Worth comment? It'd be worth paying good money to see.

Oh, don't misunderstand; had I been invited, I might well have uttered the same epithet. It's certainly richly deserved.
But if I worked under Wendy Alexander (speed the day!), I would bite my tongue...
